i know i know i know. i've heard more than a few times that i'm sorely disappointing those of you who follow my blog. i don't know. i just got overwhelmed getting back into the swing of things and blogging seemed like a daunting task. i suppose it's because my life is boringly normal to me now. wilmington has become my home and it's residents my friends. my apologies to all 5 of you who read this.
my days are pretty much the same - kindergarten, afterschool program, nighttime activities. nothing too exciting.
kindergarten has been going really well. like i said in my newsletter, the kidos are maturing so much. they are learning how to use their words instead of hitting, they say kind things to each other some of the time (big breakthrough) and they can sit relatively quietly for lessons and stories.
of course there's normal kindergarten-y stuff too. thursday, briarra threw up her lunch all over her desk. i had to clean up the slimy cheeto regurgitation while trying to keep myself from following suit. taylor dances too scandalously during "the body rock" activity, dropping it low, doing body rolls, and swaying her little six year old hips like a grown woman. andrew never actually does the body rock but instead stares, hypnotized, at taylor. i'm not sure where taylor learned how to dance like this but what i do know is that she talks about doing"praise dance" at her church. let's hope to god this isn't where she's learning these moves. and braheem loves to dress up during play time. one day i told him i liked his paisley red and glittery gold woman's blazer (complete with shoulder pads). he looked over his shoulder at me and said casually, "thanks, i got it in homeliving."
i have been able to work with shaun and vincent on some auditory processing, number recognition, handwriting and fine motor skills. this has been my favorite change coming into our second trimester. i love working one-on-one with kids and i feel like my greatest strengths are utilized during these times.
a lot of things happened in january. [warning: this may get a little preachy] we got to see obama on his way through wilmington during the whistle stop tour. afterwards, we met up with some of the urban promise street leaders. we sat and chatted about the effect his election has already had in their lives. i know lots of people are excited about obama and others aren’t too excited for various reasons (of which some may be valid while others may be unfounded). regardless of your view i hope we can all recognize the monumental breakthrough our country has made. it's no small thing to look into the eyes of a young black boy or girl living in the ghetto and hear them say, “now, i see that success is for me too and i can accomplish anything i set my mind to.” it is extremely powerful and absolutely relevant to what jesus was all about -- seeking to bring heaven’s will to earth’s systems. there is good and bad to every presidential election. my hope is that we can all embrace the beauty in this one. [end sermon. also, i need to cite jason for some thoughts on this rant.]
a few days later i had the privilege of watching obama become our 44th president with deb as she cried and cried. every so often she would turn to me and say, "we have a black president!" and cry some more. it was a day i'll never forget and i wouldn't change any part of it.

my question to you would be: what do you expect taylor to do during an activity called "the body rock"? sounds like she's the only one who knows what she is doing.
yay obama! i still tear up whenever i think about him being president!
Amen to that.
love this trizzle. little taylor... and it sounds like andrew stares, hypnotized, like a grown man!
so true about obama. there was a just beauty in his innauguration, regardless of the politics. i was wanting to hear how his election impacted your community. so cool to hear about it.
missing you tons.
we could be running.
